Gildan Ranked as One of 100 Most Sustainable Companies Globally

The manufacturer of apparel basics was number 60 on Corporate Knights’ rigorous assessment of nearly 7,000 public corporations’ sustainability efforts.

Gildan is one of the world’s 100 most sustainable corporations, according to a sustainable-economy media and research company.

This is the second year in a row that the Montreal-headquartered global manufacturer of apparel basics has appeared on Corporate Knights’ “Global 100” list. Gildan, which has put a strong focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives, moved up its ranking from 79th in 2022 to 60th overall this year. It was the only apparel manufacturer to make the cut.

“We are pleased to be recognized by Corporate Knights once more, demonstrating Gildan’s strong commitment to ESG,” said Glenn Chamandy, president and CEO of Gildan. “Our increased ranking reflects our dedication and hard work in developing and advancing our Next Generation ESG strategy over the past year, which includes increasing gender diversity, focusing on sustainable investments and employee safety, and linking executive compensation to ESG targets, amongst other initiatives.”

Corporate Knights’ ranking of the world’s 100 most sustainable corporations is based on a rigorous assessment of nearly 7,000 public companies with revenues of more than $1 billion. Their methodology assesses up to 25 quantitative key performance indicators, including sustainable revenue and investment, carbon productivity, and racial and gender diversity. This is the 19th year that Corporate Knights has been ranking corporations for sustainability, and the media company notes in the intro to its Global 100 that “unprecedented climate disasters” as well as Russia’s war in Ukraine driving up energy prices mean that it’s “never been more important for companies to cut their emissions and double down on sustainability.”

Gildan, whose apparel sells extensively in the promotional products industry, has been making a concerted push into sustainable initiatives recently. Last month, the company announced the publication of its first stand-alone Climate Change Disclosure report. It also noted its 10th consecutive inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and in CDP’s Leadership Band for its climate change disclosures in 2022.
