Hexa Custom Pauses Manufacturing Indefinitely After Chinese Factory Consolidates

The maker of highly customized outerwear says it is “thoughtfully exploring potential paths forward.”

Key Takeaways

Indefinite Pause: Hexa Custom (asi/60557) is pausing all manufacturing activities indefinitely after its main factory partner ceased production in China, consolidating operations in Vietnam. It also closed its U.S.-based offices in Boulder, CO.

Tariff Impact: The decision to pause operations was influenced by the lasting impacts of COVID-19, economic shifts in China and ongoing tariff uncertainties, according to the supplier.

Boulder, CO-based supplier Hexa Custom (asi/60557), a maker of on-demand customizable outerwear, announced Friday that it would be putting all manufacturing activities on pause indefinitely, effective Saturday, May 10, after its main factory partner ceased production in China.

Hexa Custom (asi/60557), a supplier known for its on-demand customizable outerwear, announced that it was pausing manufacturing indefinitely.

In an email sent out to customers, Hexa wrote that “due to the lasting impacts of COVID-19, economic shifts in China, and the ongoing tariff situation, our primary manufacturing partner – and company owner – in Tianjin, China, has made the decision to consolidate all production at their facility in Vietnam.”

The Vietnam facility, Hexa said, lacks “the specialized infrastructure required for our highly customized outerwear.”

Hexa added that pausing manufacturing was a necessary step as the company “navigate(s) complex global challenges.”

“While we cannot predict exactly what the future holds, we are thoughtfully exploring potential paths forward,” the Hexa team continued in its message. “Our focus remains on honoring the relationships we’ve built and the standard of quality our community has come to expect.”

In another communication to distributor customers shared with ASI Media, Hexa Custom said that its U.S. office in Boulder, CO, had been shut down.

Hexa Custom launched in the promo industry in 2019, after starting in the retail space with touchscreen kiosks that let consumers design their own jackets and have them shipped directly to their homes. The company developed a factory-direct solution, with a proprietary ordering platform enabling distributors and their clients to customize multiple aspects of its outerwear. At the time, General Manager Sue Timbo said, “We feel like we’re delivering something that this industry hasn’t seen before.”

This year, President Donald Trump placed a 145% additional tariff on goods imported from China, citing unfair trade practices, national security concerns and an asserted health emergency tied to the inflow of fentanyl from the country. Trade talks planned over the weekend have a target of reducing tariffs. Still, tariffs on China and other nations, as well as metals like steel and aluminum, that Trump has implemented in 2025 have been driving price increases in promo, among other impacts.
